How much does the Berlin Marathon cost? (2027 ballot)

Photo: Florian Wehde / Unsplash

The Berlin Marathon bib is a Major entry fee, not a charity invoice. The weekend is where UK runners usually feel the number — short-haul flights, September hotels, and an expo day that eats a full afternoon.

The 2027 lottery opened on 1 October and closes on 12 November 2026. From 2027 the race is the Generali Berlin Marathon: same organiser, SCC EVENTS, with a new title sponsor after 16 years of BMW. The participation fee rises to €215, up from €205 in 2026. It includes expo access, a four-day ABC public-transport ticket, and a finish poncho. It does not include a room near the Brandenburg Gate, a flight into BER, or a fundraising pledge if you take a charity route.

This page splits those paths. Confirm the current edition on generali-berlin-marathon.com before you pay anyone. Fees, pledges, and hotel rates move.

What “Berlin Marathon cost” actually includes

Three different questions get stuffed into one search.

  1. What do I pay the organiser? Lottery place: €215 for 2027. Charity: registration fee plus pledge. Tour operator or training package: whatever that bundle lists.
  2. What do you pay to be in Berlin that weekend? Flights into BER, hotels, food, U-Bahn if you are not walking everywhere, maybe Museum Island or a city ticket for whoever is not racing.
  3. What does a charity place cost in cash you have to find? The pledge is real money you have to raise or cover. It does not replace the flight or the hotel.

We only answer (1) and (2) with indicative figures. (3) belongs to the charity you sign with.

How the 2027 ballot works

The lottery runs from 1 October to 12 November 2026 on the official registration page. You need a personal user account and must enter card details, but nothing is charged unless you get a place. Pick your entry type carefully: it cannot be changed once you submit.

  • Solo: one entry, one result.
  • Team of two or three: each person registers with their own account and a shared team code. If the team is drawn, everyone gets a place.
  • Fast runner: upload proof of a marathon time from 2025 or 2026. The youngest band needs sub-2:45 for men and sub-3:10 for women; the two older bands get 2:55 / 3:30 and 3:25 / 4:20. Check your birth-year band on the official page. A qualifying time is not an automatic place, and invalid proof drops you into the general draw.

Everyone hears on 3 December 2026. If you are drawn, the €215 is charged from 4 December. Entries cannot be refunded or transferred to another runner or year.

If the draw says no, the open routes are a charity place or an official tour operator. Charity places run through the organisers’ partners, including realbuzz, which lists more than 150 charities with UK teams among them. The organisers say tour operators “usually still have available and guaranteed spots long after the lottery”, but only operators on the official list are authorised. Do not price a Mitte room until 3 December.

What the weekend costs from the UK

Running shoes, a hotel key card, a BER boarding pass and Euro notes laid out on a hotel desk.

Berlin is a short-haul Major, not a stay-at-home race. The flight is usually the predictable line; Mitte on race weekend is the one that bites.

Our Berlin Marathon estimate uses an indicative £185 bib (the official 2027 fee is €215), £120 a night, and £90 flights. For one runner and one room, three nights is about £635 before optional extras. Ground transport from BER is usually a FEX or regional train to Hauptbahnhof, then U-Bahn or S-Bahn — not a mandatory private transfer unless you land late with kit.

ScenarioWhat we are countingIndicative total
Lottery bib, 2 nights (tight expo + race)Bib + 2 × £120 + flightAbout £515 on those assumptions
Lottery bib, 3 nights (expo day + race + buffer)Bib + 3 × £120 + flightAbout £635
Charity place, 3 nightsRegistration + pledge + hotel + flightPledge dominates: roughly £1,600–£2,750 on the 2027 pages we checked

Mitte puts you walking distance from the start and finish. Charlottenburg and Prenzlauer Berg trade a few U-Bahn stops for quieter streets and sometimes a saner nightly rate. Book the room after the confirmation email, not before the draw.

Saturday is expo day for most people. The marathon expo is not a five-minute bib pickup. Queue, merch, and getting back across town are why three nights beats squeezing collection into race morning.

Berlin vs other short-haul marathons

If the search was really “how much does a marathon weekend cost from the UK,” Berlin is the prestige flat Major. It is not always the cheapest line on the board.

Indicative DIY totals from our catalog (one runner, one room, recommended nights, no charity pledge):

RaceBib (indicative)Nights × hotelUK travelIndicative total
Valencia Marathon£1553 × £95£90~£530
London Marathon£803 × £160Own rail / Tube~£560
Amsterdam Marathon£903 × £150£70~£610
Berlin Marathon£1853 × £120£90~£635

Those are calculator defaults, not live hotel quotes. Change nights and airport on each page. Berlin 2027 is 26 September. Valencia’s ballot vs charity maths: Valencia Marathon cost. Amsterdam’s open-sale vs charity maths: Amsterdam Marathon cost.

Charity Berlin is still cheaper than charity London on the pledges we checked, but it is not a £635 problem once the pledge lands. If the goal is a first overseas marathon without fundraising, use the first-overseas guide. If the goal is a time, start with European marathons for a PB.

The traps that inflate the number

Hotels before the bib. Results land on 3 December, not when you apply. A non-refundable Mitte room booked in October is a bet on the draw.

Two nights when you still have to do the expo. Bib collection is a proper afternoon. Squeeze it into race morning and you pay in alarms and stress instead of an extra night.

Assuming the bib line is the whole trip. €215 is real. So is £360 in hotels on our default three-night assumption, plus the flight.

Forgetting the entry is non-refundable. Berlin does not refund the fee or let you pass the place to someone else. The organisers offer race-cancellation insurance at registration; decide before you submit, because the clothing-bag option (€5 instead of the finish poncho) is also only bookable then.

Tour-operator certainty tax. Guaranteed entries exist for a reason. Run the DIY total on the trip page before you buy a bundle because the lottery said no.

September weather is kinder than hype, but pack for cool mornings. Berlin is a PB course, not a heat race. That does not mean shorts-at-8:45 is always right.

What to do next

  1. Enter the lottery by 12 November on generali-berlin-marathon.com. Decide solo or team first — you cannot switch later.
  2. Decide your fallback now. UK charity teams for 2027 are already recruiting; if you want certainty, apply before their places go.
  3. Wait for 3 December. If you are drawn, open the Berlin Marathon trip page, set nights to match your flight times, price Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg hotels, and lock flights into BER against that total.

The Majors UK guide covers how Berlin sits next to London, Chicago, and the rest of the Six Star list. For London’s ballot-vs-charity maths, see London Marathon cost.
